Project Summary
Nigeria, bustling with more than 140 million citizens, faces numerous challenges. Though blessed with natural and human resources, periods of economic and political instability have lead to high levels of poverty with many Nigerians surviving on less than $2 per day.
Like most of Sub-Saharan Africa, healthcare access is an enduring challenge in Nigeria. Rural and urban areas alike are faced with high a infectious disease burden (e.g. malaria HIV and its co-morbidities, tuberculosis etc). This has drawn significant attention in recent years and continues to be an area of tremendous need. In urban areas especially, there is an additional need to improve emergency medical services. It is our belief that relatively low cost interventions in the emergency setting can greatly impact patient care and outcomes. |

Need At the very basic level, an emergency medical service (EMS) system should have public safety answering points (PSAP) that citizens can access to obtain triage information and pre-hospital management advice. Once arriving to the appropriate health care setting, trained EMS staff can provide care. Staff should be trained not only in the standards of management but in resourcefulness in the face of extreme constraints. These basic elements are effectively lacking in the current Nigerian healthcare system.
Goal Our goal is to develop interventions that are both sustainable and cost-effective and that optimize current emergency healthcare resources. We are currently pursuing the following objectives: 1. Exploring a PSAP System that takes advantage of current cell phone technology 2. Developing EMS Training Modules 3. Developing integrated Disease/Trauma Management Protocols for improving patient care in emergency settings.
